Josua CORTS Sohn GmbH & Co. KG

Specialist in wear plates and guiding elements with a focus on the steel industry
The Family Business
CORTS s a globally leading specialist in plant efficiency with a particular focus on sintering and rolling mill systems.
Our precision wear parts and guiding elements ensure minimal wear and maximum accuracy, thanks to our original CORTS composite steel and over 90 years of expertise in wear protection and manufacturing.
As an engineering service partner, we support you with expert advice and hands-on solutions – from spare parts to turnkey system solutions.
.
For over 190 years, the family-owned company CORTS has stood for precision made in Germany.
Founded as a toolsmithing business, we now serve customers around the globe from our headquarters in Remscheid. Our focus is on the steel, aluminum, and metal industries.
Our core strength lies in optimizing stand and insert geometries and increasing the efficiency of rolling processes and production.
We rely on around 100 experienced and skilled employees, a closely connected network of international sales partners, a wealth of industry knowledge, and a solution-driven, collaborative approach with our customers.
The Challenge of Wear
In global competition, rolling mills face the challenge of ensuring both the cost-efficiency of the rolling process and the highest quality of the rolled products – which means minimizing wear is essential.
The Problem:
If rolling mill housings and inserts are equipped with conventional wear plates made of structural steel, tempered tool steel, or bronze, abrasion, impact, and corrosion will lead to wear on the guiding surfaces – resulting in a reduction in thickness or damage to the wear plates. As surface wear progresses, the clearance between the housing and the insert increases, and extreme loads are distributed across reduced contact areas – significantly accelerating wear.

Tilting, oscillation, and misalignment of the inserts occur in both horizontal and vertical directions (cross rolling). This results in excessive loads on the work and backup roll bearings, insert locking systems, and the insert bodies themselves – leading to high repair and spare part costs.
In addition, unplanned downtime and negative effects on the rolling process and final product quality may occur, such as chatter marks, waviness, ski and sabre shapes, edge waves, and strip breaks.
As surface wear progresses, the clearance between the housing and the insert increases, and extreme loads are transferred across reduced contact areas – leading to a significant increase in wear.
A competitive advantage
CORC-g Compound Steel
Unlike conventional through-hardened wear parts, our precision flat guides are made from original CORTS composite steel. This combines the advantages of two different materials:
The solid through-hardened sliding surface is made of high-quality European tool steel, optionally also corrosion-resistant. The base material, on the other hand, is low-alloyed and elastic. This unique material combination acts as both wear and corrosion protection – and offers comprehensive and highly effective protection for adjacent components.
Depending on the application, our precision flat guides are available in the following grades: CORC-g-Standard, CORC-g-Stainless, and CORC-g-Solid Steel.

CORC-g-Standard can be used in almost all application areas and features a very high hardness in the through-hardened wear layer.
CORC-g-Stainless should be used in areas where, in addition to frictional wear, there is a high level of corrosive exposure.
Under the CORC-g-Solid Steel grade, we manufacture high-performance guiding elements – such as pressure plates and pendulum plates – from specially selected, special-alloyed tool steels. These are optionally corrosion-protected and designed for demanding applications such as guide strips for machine tools and automation systems operating under heavy loads.
The hardness of the sliding surfaces ranges, depending on the material, from 56 to 62 HRC (uniform throughout, with no drop-off), and the thickness of this through-hardened layer accounts for approximately 25 percent of the total material thickness.
